Dear Amira,

In this letter, let me try to capture the essence of you; you are vibrant (1), creative (2) and a dreamer (3), sometimes in ways I can’t understand. You’re passionate (4), filled with emotion (5) and a chaser of the unconventional (6). You were not made to be tamed (7), because you are like the wind that wanders without reigns. I could say you almost sound like the ‘hippie’ of the family, even moreso with your love for animals (8) and you’re incompatibility with technology (9). You’re a singer (10), a writer (11) and a poet (12) — all things I love. But what I love the most is that you listen (13), you reflect (14) and you have such little ego (15) because I have never seen anyone take onboard criticisms as well as you. You are growing (16) and it’s a pleasure to watch, a pleasure even to be challenged by you. And even though you are — — — — — — — — (17) and — — — — — (18) at times, I am honoured to have you be my only sister.

Amira, my life would have definitely been incomplete and less satisfying without you in it. I love our car rides and late night conversations and I love that we learn from each other’s differences. I love you unconditionally and you are one of the people of my heart.

I pray that you enjoy yourself and grow over the next few years as you are met with new people, thoughts, ideologies and life situations. I pray you find yourself and become the best version of yourself emotionally, intellectually and islamically.

Love,

Sumya apu

Dear Salman,

In this letter, let me try to capture the essence of you; you are a person of extremes (1), in the good and the bad. You’re like fireworks (2) ,filled with energy (3) that lights up the night sky with brilliance and entertains (4). You are dedicated (5) and persistent (6), almost to a fault. You like routine (7) and order (8) and in some ways you are like a perfectionist (9). Your mind works fast (10), which often works for you and against you.

The essence of you would not be holistic if I didn’t describe you as annoying (11), stubborn (12) and someone with no chill (13). However you have so much potential (14) and just need to tweak some of that — — — — — — — — — (15) and — — — — — — — -. (16).

Salman, you inspire me at times with your dedication, especially with the many changes in life you’re adjusting to. I can’t understand the way your brain works in the ways that you can, but it must be tough and I applaud you for persevering. You’re still growing and there’s so many more changes you’ll be facing — I am hopeful for the person you will become. I love you unconditionally and you are one of the people of my heart.

I pray you enjoy these last two years of high school and that you excel in all your academic, Islamic, driving, gym and character goals. I pray you become a person that everyone looks up to for the good things.

Love,

Sumya apu

Dear Imran,

In this letter, let me try to capture the essence of you; you are solid (1) and warm (2), a background presence (3) that is always present. You are simple (4) in the most beautiful way because you are non-judgemental (5), unassuming (6), forgiving (7). You stay to yourself (8) without messing in anyone else’s drama, you demand nothing from anyone (9) and are always willing to help (10). You are patient (11) and selfless (12) in ways that I admire. You take life easy (13) and with humour (14), making us all laugh even in the weirdest of moments. You live in the moment (15), partly due to your horrendous memory (16). You’re like a rock (17) that grounds us in the everyday and in the storm. But maybe a more accurate description would be a hidden gem because it’s difficult to find people like you these days. You stand out physically, but it is your inner character that shines even though you are — — — — (18), — — — — — — (19) and a — — — — (20).

Imran, I love spending hours talking to you and I love when it was just you and me in Adelaide. I have loved you from the moment you were born twenty years ago and you made me an older sister. I love you unconditionally and you are one of the people of my heart.

I pray your 20s are the years of transformation and motivation, of self-discovery and gym and relationship gains. I pray you graduate uni, get a job and give back to the community. I pray you get closer to Allah everyday.

Love,

Sumya apu

I dump some of my raw, unedited thoughts, emotions and ideas here, some refined ones too. It’s a bit of a chaotic, wonderful, mess. Dare to venture within?
